Later on, when Bones thinks Nebbercracker really is dead, he laughs at his house and tears up some of the lawn, then the house opened it's front door and Bones' kite flies into view. However, as soon as Bones walked into the door and grabbed his kite, the house then eats him alive. Ascertaining that the presumably-deceased Nebbercracker is the cause, the trio construct a dummy filled with cough syrup Chowder stole from a pharmacy owned by his father. They offer the dummy to the house to eat, hoping to put the house to sleep so they can find its "heart" (its furnace). Landers and Lister then inadvertently foil the plan as the former discovers the stolen medicine; as they attempt to arrest the trio, the house soon eats them all. Separated from the officers, the children explore the sleeping house and end up in its basement.

The house overhears him, breaks free of its foundations and chases Nebbercracker and the children to a construction site. Chowder fights the house off with a back hoe, causing it to fall into a pit. DJ throws a stick of dynamite down the house's chimney, destroying it and setting Constance's spirit free.
The following day, a girl named Jenny is out selling candy for homeowners to give to trick-or-treaters. DJ and Chowder see her approaching Nebbercracker's house and rush to warn her not to go near the dangerous building. When the house fails to do anything, the police officers conclude that the children were just playing a prank on them and leave. When Zee's boyfriend Bones later pays a visit, he recalls the time Nebbercracker stole his kite, as well as relating rumors of him cannibalizing his wife. After Zee kicks him out, Bones notices his kite in the front door of Nebbercracker's house, tries to retrieve it and is abducted. And Chowder later investigate and learn that the house is possessed by a poltergeist.

On Halloween, during their house's construction, some children began tormenting Constance. Provoked, she attempted to chase them off as Nebbercracker tries to stop her, only to be knocked out as she stumbled and fell into the unfinished basement with her body accidentally being coated in cement, suffocating her. Nebbercracker then finished the house's construction in Constance's memory, but her vengeful spirit soon merged with it. Over the years, Nebbercracker feigned aggression to protect innocent people from her. And for the most part they talk and behave like real kids, too, or at least like characters drawn from the rich tradition of plucky, intellectually curious kiddie-lit heroes.
A disrespectful paperboy gets knocked from his bike by a boomerang newspaper. Upon awaking he receives ominous phone calls from the abandoned house. On two occasions, boys get knocked to the pavement by automobiles.
Later they came to Mr. Nebbercracker's lawn and Chowder rings the doorbell. This also awakens the house, and it tries to grab him with it's tongue carpet and fails. It later roars at DJ and Chowder which caused them to run to DJ's house. DJ and Chowder take Jenny to the pizzeria where Reginald "Skull" Skulinski, an overweight video-game fanatic works.
The children's plan almost succeeds, but the two police officers who had appeared earlier find them with the dummy full of drugs and arrest them. The officers put the three children in the back of their police car while they go to look inside the house. The house swallows the two police officers and the car with the children inside it .
It received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, but lost to Happy Feet and Cars, respectively. "Bones" is Zee's boyfriend, and the secondary antagonist in Monster House.
It also represents, to the technology nerds in the audience, an interesting refinement of animation techniques. Like Robert Zemeckis's "Polar Express," "Monster House" (for which Mr. Zemeckis served as an executive producer) uses the digitally captured movements of real actors rather than computer-generated algorithms as the basis for its animated images. The postures and gestures of DJ (Mitchell Musso) and his pals -- a pudgy fellow named Chowder (Sam Lerner) and a preppy redhead named Jenny (Spencer Locke) -- have an authentically loose and antic look. They seem like real kids, rather than like super-cute, big-headed cartoon moppets.
On the day before Halloween, 12-year-old Dustin James "D.J." Walters documents his elderly neighbor, Horace Nebbercracker, stealing a little girl's tricycle and scaring her away from his house, one of many similar incidents that have occurred. That same day, D.J.'s parents leave for a convention, placing him in the care of his teenage babysitter Elizabeth, or Zee. Later, D.J.'s friend, Charles "Chowder" Peterson, loses his basketball on Nebbercracker's lawn; D.J. He appears to suffer a heart attack and is presumed dead by the duo as he is taken away in an ambulance.
And since this is a movie aimed at an audience for whom the grosser bodily functions are a perpetual source of laughs, it vomits them up again. The house roars, belches, spits fire and in the end turns out to beKathleen Turner. Slightly disappointed but ultimately not caring, Bones leaves with his kite, leading to an annoyed Zee to call out for him while Skull remains oblivious.
They find all the toys Nebbercracker had stolen and a shrine to his wife, Constance the Giantess, whose skeletal remains are encased in cement. The house soon awakens and attacks them, but they trigger its gag reflex by grabbing its uvula equivalent (a chandelier), forcing it to vomit them outside. The next morning, a Westbrook Prep student named Jenny Bennett is selling Halloween candies. DJ and Chowder see her going to Mr. Nebbercracker's house and they rush out to warn her catching her before she is eaten by the house. Jenny then calls Officer Landers and Officer Lister, but does not believe their story. Later the trio seek advice from Skull who is claimed to be an expert on the supernatural.
